District tops state list for fifth year in a row

09/12/2014 Lindbergh Schools continues to lead the state in academic achievement, ranking No. 1 in Missouri for the fifth consecutive year in 2014.

The ranking of Missouri's 583 districts statewide is according to student achievement data from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, which was released in August.

Lindbergh Schools is the highest ranked district in combined math and English Language Arts proficiency for the fifth year in a row.

"This is a pretty extraordinary picture, and we congratulate all of our parents, teachers, staff and students for their continued commitment to excellence in education," said Nancy Rathjen, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction.

Also leading the state this year is Lindbergh High School, whose combined math and ELA scores ranked higher than any other high school in Missouri. Truman follows with a No. 2 ranking among middle schools, and Concord and Long rank No. 3 and No. 4 among all elementary schools, respectively. Every single Lindbergh school ranked in the top 20 when compared with other Missouri schools with the same grade levels.

"Our students are really well prepared for success not only in college, but also in life," Superintendent Jim Simpson said. "We're very proud of that. Number one, five years in a row has never been done."

Rathjen said professional development for teachers, individualized and small group instruction in classrooms, and frequent assessments of student achievement all contribute to Lindbergh's top test scores.

Lindbergh also distinguishes itself among traditional Missouri public schools with the high level of interactive classroom technology training that is offered to teachers. As a result of this program, students bring their own digital devices to use in school each day and are well prepared for careers in a 21st century global society.
