St. Louis Public Schools returning $145,000 it received from attendance fraud : News

ST. LOUIS > School district to repay state funds • St. Louis Public Schools will reimburse the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education $145,000 for the excess funds the district received as the result of attendance fraud committed at Patrick Henry Downtown Academy in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
The district’s Special Administrative Board unanimously approved the reimbursement at its meeting Thursday.
A state audit in 2011 found that the principal of Patrick Henry had directed the school secretary to alter attendance records during those years, helping the school reach the numbers it needed to meet federal No Child Left Behind requirements. As a result of those inflated figures, the district also received extra state funding. That principal no longer works for St. Louis schools.
In September, Missouri Auditor Thomas Schweich found that the district had never repaid the state. He recommended that district officials return the cash. (Elisa Crouch)
NORTH COUNTY > Water main break prompts school closure • All classes in the Normandy School District are canceled today, due to a boil order that is in effect for several North County communities, district officials said. But the University of Missouri-St. Louis will be open.
Missouri American Water reported a large water main break and told its customers in the area of UMSL to boil their water as a precaution.
The advisory issued Thursday night applied to the UMSL campus and approximately 2,200 Missouri American customers in parts of Bel-Ridge, Bellerive, Bel-Nor, Normandy and St. John.
The water company advised customers in the boil order area to bring their water to a rolling boil for three minutes before using it for drinking or cooking.
The company said it hoped to lift the advisory this afternoon.
Earlier Thursday, UMSL closed its north and south campuses because of a water outage. But the university announced Thursday night that the campus would be open this morning. (From staff reports)
