New Board Member To Be Appointed By A Committee of Board of Education Members

The Lee's Summit R-7 Board of Education accepted a letter of resignation from Board member Annette Braam at a brief open meeting on Feb. 8.

"It is with great sadness that I must resign as a member of the Board of Education," stated Mrs. Braam in a letter to the board. "My husband and I have been looking for a home over the past two years and recently found one that would meet our needs. Unfortunately, although still in Lee's Summit, it is not located in the R-7 School District."

Mrs. Braam served on the R-7 Board of Education from 2002 to 2005 and was re-elected to a three-year term in April 2010. Within the R-7 School District, she was serving as the school board's liaison to the district's Citizens' Advisory Committee and the R-7 Business Roundtable and served on the Lee's Summit City Council/Board of Education Steering Committee. In addition, she is a long-time Lee's Summit Educational Foundation Board member and volunteer.

Within the community, Mrs. Braam has served as chairperson for the Lee's Summit Historic Preservation Commission, as a member of the Lee's Summit Old Homes Group and on the PTA. Her two sons are both graduates of Lee's Summit High School.

"I cannot begin to express what an honor it has been to work with a Board of Education whose first priority is always doing 'what's best for kids,'" Mrs. Braam added. "Although we certainly faced some trying issues, the fact that the Board has always worked to come to consensus on these issues has made the tough decisions easier to handle."

Mrs. Braam has been an outstanding Board of Education member and a valuable supporter for Lee's Summit R-7 students and schools, said Dr. David McGehee, R-7 superintendent.

"Annette has provided exemplary leadership with a focus on students, families and our community," Dr. McGehee added. "We are grateful for her work within the Board of Education and for her role in representing the Board on other school district and community organizations."

The R-7 Board of Education will be appointing a school district resident to serve a one-year term on the Board of Education later this spring. All Board of Education members are unpaid volunteers.

From Feb. 13 through 27, the Board of Education will be accepting letters of interest from persons who would like to be appointed to the one-year term. Letters of interest should be submitted to Linda Ismert, Board secretary, at the Stansberry Leadership Center, 301 NE Tudor Road, Lee's Summit, Mo., 64086.

A committee of Board of Education members will review these letters in March with final candidates participating in interviews. The new Board of Education member will be appointed on April 12 with this term expiring in April 2013.

Board of Education members must be United States citizens, a voter of the school district and must have resided in Missouri for at least one year preceding his or her appointment to the Board. Board members must also be at least 24 years old and eligible to hold office in accordance with Missouri law.
